Great #AuroraBorealis display tonight from Glenariff between the torrential rain showers! Gutted that my camera went out of focus though!

Supernova hunting shenanigans at 2am on top of the Astrophysics Research Centre @ QUB building in Belfast. My telescope + Alan's expert star hopping technique + Alan's CCD turned out to be a good combination! We were hunting for SN2023ixf in the Pinwheel Galaxy (M101). (The brightest SN in 10 years.)

An incredible opportunity presented itself tonight. Falcon Heavy with the X-37 (Orbital Test Vehicle) transits a rising moon over Florida’s Space Coast. 📸 me for Cosmic Perspective

C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan–ATLAS) may become a naked eye comet! Tsuchinshan = 紫金山 = Purple Mountain 紫 = tsu = zǐ = purple (say "sir" with a z) 金 = chin = jīn = gold (sing the drink "gin") 山 = shan = shān = mountain (sing Welsh name "Siân") (Incidentally, purple gold == copper!)

It is totally awesome to see a comet from orbit. The perspective of rising through the atmosphere on edge is truly unique from our vantage point. The comet tail is still too dim to see with your eyes, but it is heading towards the sun and growing brighter every day.  This comet

This huge, peanut-shaped asteroid whizzed past the Earth 2 weeks ago. It's over 1100'/350m long. Glad it missed us! details: tinyurl.com/uah4n9h6 radar image: NASA DSN Goldstone

Don't miss the celestial show! ☄️ The "comet of the century" has been putting on quite a show, and it's about to dip below the eastern horizon. Soon, it'll appear on the other side of the Sun in the evening sky. For now, enjoy these spectacular photos from 570CK3!

When was the last time there were TWO naked eye visible comets in the sky at the same time?? C/2023 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) already just about visible (and heading north) and this MAY be joined at the end October by C/2024 S1 (ATLAS). Yay for ATLAS Project!
