#Oracy Tips: learn to use pause. Pause is the punctuation of speech, it adds meaning. Pause allows you to breathe, stay calm and composed. Practice: play with lengths of pause when reading aloud; record yourself! #PrimaryRocks #PrimaryHeads #PrimaryCurriculum

#Oracy Tips: are you speaking too quickly? It's easy to lose yourself, become random and lose your listeners! The answer? Learn to use pause 😄 It will help you stay calm and speak with confident, well-measured pace. #PrimaryRocks #PrimaryHeads #PrimaryCurriculum

#Oracy Tips: "like" "so" "basically"? You sound nervous and as if you don't know what you're talking about. PAUSE! to stay calm and focussed, think about what you are saying and try to replace 'filler' words with silence...a pause! #PrimaryRocks #PrimaryHeads #PrimaryCurriculum

#Oracy Tips: increase the power if your words! Use pause for emphasis: lift key words with a pause before, or after or both; let important phrases 'land' with a pause. #PrimaryRocks #PrimaryHeads #PrimaryCurriculum

#Oracy Tips: a flurry of tweets today to recap on pause! One more: pause to persuade! In pauses people think about what you're saying, they form opinions, they feel something! #PrimaryRocks #PrimaryHeads #PrimaryCurriculum

#Oracy: outpourings of thoughts are not fathomable, memorable or persuasive. Information overload loses the power of words! Clear thought processes; focussed, succinct, relevant speaking: people listen, engage & remember! How do we develop this? Come back tomorrow! #PrimaryRocks

For example, when I was kid, we were giving presentations from the age of 12 or 13 if not earlier at school. Marked down for just reading off a sheet of paper. This work counted towards year-end mark (exams only made up for a third). And in the UK? x.com/AllieRenison/s…

I've been thinking a lot about the biologically primary/secondary learning idea and I think it downplays the complexity of what parents and practitioners do in early years. Children don't 'just learn' to talk, it takes a lot of input. 🤷‍♀️
