As an Indigenous academic, I find the university ethics processes to work with Indigenous communities upsetting and anxiety inducing. They damage my existing relationships with communities and make my navigating in culturally appropriate ways… impossible. #nativesinstem

Realized today that I've lost access to journal articles (since it's been a few months since I graduated from UBC). 😭 Being an early career researcher between jobs is hard! We've got to change our model for scientific publishing.

Dr Tara McAllister (she/her/ia) with advice for pākehā and tauiwi on how not to abuse Vision Mātauranga when preparing grant proposals. And with an inspiring wider call to change our systems to prevent the storms that push Māori out of science.

Oops. Went tramping solo on the west coast and ended up having my first chopper ride... 48 hours later I was being wheeled down the isle as a bridesmaid & singing at my friends wedding 😂 Thanks Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue!! Guess I’ll be playing more music for a while…

“I knew that I’d got into med school with one of the lowest marks in the class, but I finished med school in the top 20 per cent, which I think goes to show that supporting Māori into med school is important.” — Dr Sue Crengle Sue Crengle e-tangata.co.nz/korero/dr-sue-…

#Popgen #genomics question… any recommendations for calculating coalescence time with ddRAD SNP data (~1350 SNPs)? I was thinking fastsimcoal2. Having trouble working out what filtering I should do b4… also should I have invariant sites in the input file? I can get that. 🙏

Passing on a message from Karla, a researcher in the Macknight lab, who just had a baby: Two weeks ago, our wee baby girl came into the world. Currently, she is a happy and healthy baby. However, she was diagnosed with scaphocephaly, a 1/2000 birth condition, 1/n

A very thoughtful and nuanced piece by Tihema. He reminds Pākehā who are engaging in te reo Māori spaces that understanding how to be a good manuwhiri is critical.

R hive mind! Can anyone recommend a free or cheap online R course that’s very accessible and geared towards people who have no coding experience at all? For ppl who have only used excel. I have a friend in Aotearoa who really wants to develop R skills for their job! #R #rstats
