7/ But the private sector also plays a rule to protect democracy. Independent industry has power. The tariffs are Trump’s tool to erode that independence. Now, one by one, every industry or company will need to pledge loyalty to Trump in order to get sanctions relief.

This is different from Trump's usual tariff theater, this time he can't just reverse course and claim victory. It's happening. Also he truly believes in this stupidity, so he wouldn't back out even if he could. Either Congress does its job and stops the madness, or we're cooked.

Trump has few sincerely-held policy positions. On most things he is mercurial, committed only to what gives him more power. So it is bad luck for us that one of his true beliefs is that Tariffs Are Good. (His other true belief is Windmills Are Bad. That one is more survivable.)

Any business that speaks out about this madness risks Trump singling them out for obliteration. Capitalism, like democracy, requires the ability to speak freely. Trump has put an end to that.

What are the odds that the government is scrambling to find a different country with an authoritarian leader that they can pay to incarcerate Kilmar Abrego Garcia?

If you say "a judge found x" and there was no cross-examination, I do not give a shit about the judge's finding. Police reports are hot garbage, and police reports written by gang investigators are less accurate than letters arranged at random by squirrels

The idea the illegal demands were sent in error is laughably absurd. Harvard stood up to the bully and the bully is completely flummoxed. Instructive for how to deal with this White House in the future.

When he was confirmed I predicted with 500% certainty that Hegseth's drinking and womanizing would result in him being resigned from SecDef, so here's me admitting I was wrong. Seems he may not remain in the post long enough to get around to the drinking and womanizing scandals.

The past 60 years or so have taught us that badly outmatched adversaries can still find ways to outlast us, inflict pain, and prevail when we tire of the cost.

kinda hard to fathom the horrors that will come from this bill giving $45 billion to ICE (aka the secret police!) to cage and torture people, and untold other billions to swell the masses of ICE agents. just catastrophically bad honestly

I have rejected any and all Epstein conspiracy theories. Other than: what he did was terrible and due to his influence he got away with it for a long time. But now I think I was wrong about that, geez. Trump pretty much has to be implicated in some documents, based on all this.
