I have finally seen a Rafflesia, which is a holoparasite of the liana Tetrastigma, which are themselves structural parasites. Furthermore, horizontal gene transfer has occurred many times between Tetrastigma and the Rafflesia. We were able to find multiple growth stages!!

Has anyone looked for Rafflesia thrips? That would be a very fun distribution study.

Making great progress with slides today and just mounted a beautiful Neurothrips apache from Utah. A stunning species from a stunning place!

We had a special visitor studying special creatures… lice that live on sea lions 🦭 Yes that’s right! Our historical slide collection is invaluable to our understanding of ecological interactions. This group of lice (Echinophthiriids) are the only true marine insects!

The fact this got into press makes me realise I spend far too long umming and erring in caution before going for publication. There are absolutely wild theoretical errors here.

Some giant thrips (>10 mm?) from Papua New Guinea. I had no idea they could grow that large!
