Tête de Pelvas and Bivacco Salvasera on the border of the French Queyras and Italian Piemonte. While gently recovering from the chaos of launching the new 4000m guidebook I’m just starting to get to work on the next book on the finest bivouac huts of the Alps.

Jerome Guggisberg and Polly Harmer on the south ridge of Punta Garin above Cogne, Italy. The high mountains are already covered in a blanket of snow, and even a simple ridge climb can become an epic endeavour as winter approaches!

Another fine off-season alpine adventure to recommend – Torre di Lavina SW ridge in the eastern corner of the Gran Paradiso national park… right now there’s probably too much snow at that altitude already, but it’s worth remembering for spring or summer!

Last weekend, Valentine and I headed up Monte Rocciamelone (3538m) to spend the night in the austere chapel-refuge on the summit. The sky was clear, and it was forecast to be well below freezing on the summit. It was cold...! see IG for full story!
