So little of what made John Prescott makes any sense now — ocean liners, failing the eleven-plus, union membership, working class autodidactism — that it’s unsurprising he is being eulogised as a light entertainment star by so much of Westminster.

Full solidarity with my friends and former colleagues at The Observer who are on strike today. Whatever you think about The Guardian shedding its Sunday paper, it’s undeniable that Guardian management has handled this whole thing appallingly (1/?)

Hadley Freeman (@hadleyfreeman) 's Twitter Profile Photo

And the fact that the management seems to have been taken by surprise by the anger at them really shows how foolish they’ve been at surrounding themselves with unthreatening yes-men, and avoiding talking to the actual journalists who just want the best for the papers (2/?)

Why are they rushing through this sale? Why are they not shopping round for a better price and owner than Tortoise? Why is loss making Tortoise more likely to save The Observer than The Guardian with its ÂŁ1.3bn endowment?

Hadley Freeman (@hadleyfreeman) 's Twitter Profile Photo

And if the Scott Trust can screw over The Obs like this, how is it different from the kind of billionaire newspaper owners that The Guardian likes to boast it doesn’t have? So many questions, absolutely zero answers

So please support The Observer journalists on their strike. It’s important not just morally, but for the plurality of the press in this country. Don’t share Guardian links on here and while the strike is on, please send your concerns to The Guardian & follow The Guardian and Observer NUJ. Thank you

So Tortoise now owns the Observer. For the sake of all involved let’s hope it works. If James Harding’s figures are to be believed the Scott Trust has just enabled and funded a potentially powerful competitor to the Guardian in the liberal media space. Strange times
