Under A Metal Sky by Philip Marsden, out this week, is the very best sort of nonfiction. "Gosh, I didn't know that!" nuggets on every page, a nice vein of Cornish connection running throughout, and towards the end a sustained lode of pure travel writing gold. Highly recommended.

Next up, a sneaky preview of Patrick Galbraith's #UncommonGround. A few pages in & already nodding so hard in agreement I think I'll do myself a neck injury if I keep going! (Also an occasional "FFS! I've got that quote, I was going to say that, in my current WIP", but that's OK!)

Why, oh why, is that the grubby little trolls came for Dr Ally Louks and now are coming for this person (to whom very many congratulations) but didn't come for me. What *is* it? There has to be a reason, but I just can't put my finger on it...

Coming up next week, I'll be chatting to Philip Marsden at The Acorn about Cornwall, journeys and writing, and his brilliant new book, Under a Metal Sky. Proceeds to support the magical The Morrab Library. Apparently only a few tickets left, so grab 'em quick! theacornpenzance.com/events/going-t…

Next Thursday, I'll be talking about #TravelWriting and #Cornwall at Marazion Community Centre for Cornwall Heritage Trust 〓〓, exploring the way travel writers have helped create the "idea of Cornwall" over the centuries. Here's a link to a recording of my recent talk for Cornwall Heritage Trust 〓〓 on "Travel Writing and the Idea of Cornwall". The video is mostly just the slides, with me talking offscreen. But you do get to see me flapping my hands about during the Q&A at the end. cornwallheritagetrust.org/travel-writing…

Thoroughly enjoying current series of #Empire on Ireland with William Dalrymple anita anand & Jane Ohlmeyer. But in latest episode I'd swap out Nicholson for a much lesser known, marginally less genocidal and still more colorful Anglo-Irish imperial psychopath - Rollo Gillespie.

🚨Thrilled to reveal the cover of my new book #SmallEarthquakes. 🗓️Out in July from Hurst Publishers, it explores Britain’s rich & unexpected ties with South America, from the Atacama to Tierra del Fuego, Easter Island to South Georgia. Pre-order now ➡️ tinyurl.com/2wy8j9df
