Headline: 1/5 (!!!) of surveyed women considered dropping out of labor force during the COVID-19 pandemic recession. Great analysis by ⁦⁦The Wall Street Journal⁩ with some shocking statistics on the economic toll of pandemic on parents, and women in particular. wsj.com/articles/how-t…

Marriage matters but I suspect parenthood matters more - married women are much more likely to have school-age children, and hence held back from labor market by school closures.

Ok, listen up, everyone, Esther Duflo just said "Referees need to be more positive. This is just a paper in the AER , it's not some divine piece coming down! I am limited by the number of positive reports I get not by space available in the journal"

For today's newsletter, I wrote about the effect of COVID on gender inequality, highlighting research by @BarbaraBoelmann, Jane Olmstead-Rumsey, Michele Tertilt, Titan Alon & Matthias Doepke + a podcast w/@rmarchiel that made me way nostalgic for her history lessons rhaina.substack.com/p/4-old-inequa…

For those still trying to understand the appeal of Trump’s bluster, an old insight from Pushkin... “A deception that elevates us is dearer to us than ten thousand truths” Seems especially relevant this political season. Perhaps times really do change, but not that much...

So far, the Covid-19 recession has been a clear setback for gender equality. But what about the long run? One important force to consider: a large rise in the number of fathers who are primary caregivers to their children. wsj.com/articles/covid…

So in our research (with Jane Olmstead-Rumsey, Michele Tertilt, and Titan Alon) we argue that the Covid shock may ultimately erode gender barriers in the labor market. faculty.wcas.northwestern.edu/~mdo738/resear…

Great interview by Michele Tertilt with BBC about unique gender/family economics dimensions of our current crisis. An accessible and informative read!

New paper (with Titan Alon, Sena Coskun, David Koll, Michele Tertilt) on the impact of the pandemic recession on women's employment in 28 countries: It's a "shecession" almost everywhere, and childcare and industry/occupation effects are only part of the story. (thread)
