The Southern Hemisphere tropical cyclone season is under way with early season Tropical Storm #Lola forming in the South Pacific Ocean. It is expected to strengthen and pass close to the #SolomonIslands and #Vanuatu in the next few days.

Cyclone #Tej is moving towards landfall later today over eastern Yemen. Rainfall totals of 400mm is possible in some locations over the next few days, which is several times the annual average in this usually arid region.

#Lola is now the strongest cyclone to develop this early in the South Pacific cyclone season for over 50 years. It is moving towards landfall over #Vanuatu tomorrow.

125 AM CDT: Category 5 Hurricane #Otis makes landfall near Acapulco Mexico with maximum sustained winds estimated to be 165 mph.

#Otis took full advantage of a warm patch of ocean last night... passing over 31°C water on its approach to #Acapulco. The extremely rapid intensification from a tropical storm to a Category 5 hurricane took place over this tiny area.

Recent view of Tropical Storm #John, close to regaining hurricane strength, Hurricane #Helene in the Gulf of Mexico, newly formed Tropical Storm #Isaac moving east in the central Atlantic and disturbance 98L with a high chance of soon becoming a tropical storm.

Hurricane #Helene has made landfall on the Gulf coast of Florida with destructive category 4 sustained winds of 140 mph. A large storm storm surge is being experienced along the Florida coast, with heavy rain and strong winds pushing well inland into neighbouring Georgia.
