"The state’s math flashcards project is part of its broader Louisiana Math initiative...focusing on getting back to the basics in math education." Looks like the "southern miracle" may be based on foundational skills. an17.com/news/education… Anna Stokke Nidhi Sachdeva, PhD Zach Groshell

Low cost-, high value approach. State sending flashcards to every school to help with memorizing math facts, an evidence-based way recommended by the US Dept of Ed.

The UCSD report has excerpts from the remedial math test they had Math 2 students take, along with %s of students who passed. I gave it to my 3rd grader. She got 10 of these 12.

I think it’s really important to note that the most important job standardized testing does is check in and make sure kids are learning. They are not a perfect tool (far from it) but without them we just have vibes. And grade inflation is really hard to curb. That’s just a fact.

Great article from The 74 on VA school improvement changes in the past few years and what's possibly to come w Abigail Spanberger. I'm a big fan of her K-12 ed plan. Honored to be quoted along w/ Senator Schuyler VanValkenburg and Andrew Rotherham the74million.org/article/in-vir…

Excellent comment yesterday at the VA Board of Ed from someone who grew up in an Economically Disadvantaged, English Learner community for why high standards are so important for the least advantaged kids, esp in immigrant communities. 😢virginiamercury.com/2025/11/14/hig…

I hope to be wrong here! (Although the timing will definitely lead to news stories next year headlined "Test scores tumble under new Spanberger administration.") Unfortunately once Youngkin politicized curriculum and testing, it became impossible to trust this administration.

On a related note, trendy K-12 grading changes make parents more dependent than ever on standardized test and academic screener results to know how their kids are doing. For instance, standard-based grading might sound great in theory, but it's opaque to parents

Math scores didn’t collapse overnight. They collapsed because we treated memorization as a sin and cluttered the curriculum with “strategies.” Reading got its science moment; math is overdue.

This is a bad take. Today’s actions do not cut spending or reduce oversight responsibility. All it did was (temporarily) move some functions from one federal building to another one less than a mile away.
