Want to know the real number of labor strikes/protests that occurred in 2021? See this wonderful new Strike Tracker from Cornell ILR. Fills a big void in government reporting. Congrats to Johnnie Kallas & team.ilr.cornell.edu/worker-institu…

To: Owners and BB players' union: Get this done now. Don't be so self-centered. Think about all the people who's jobs and livelihoods depend on income from spring training and the season. Time to be responsible. Make collective bargaining do its magic!

What if Howard Schultz took the mantle as a modern Engine Charlie? If he asked: what do business, government, and workers need to do to get a system that works for everyone? Bring Biden to the table, using Starbucks as the template. Set a new template for modern work.

Roy Bahat, Erica Smiley and Lisa Lynch called for a new social contract with empowered workers and business leaders--pave the way for the next generation models for labor management relations. All at our LERA session. Let's do it. Watch the replay of our session coming soon!

Will the current upsurge in worker activism be just a flash in the pan or lead to a transformation in labor management relations? Wilma Liebman and I provide our view on this question. Happy Labor Day!wbur.org/opinion/sectio…

Elon Musk is violating basic HR principles of fairness and respect for employees as he unilaterally fires half of the staff and demands everyone work long hours, all with no employee voice. Twitter employees, stand up together in protest. All Twitter users should support them.

By firing half of Twitter's workforce and insisting survivors work long hours Musk is violating core principles of HR we all stand for and should expect from a CEO. Twitter employees, past and present, should join together to protesting his actions. We should stand with them.

MIT's IWER & DUSP hosted a #LaborSpring Teach-In comparing the Starbuck's stonewalling bargaining with a successful first contract at Forge Baking Company, a locally owned coffee house. Let's all support good labor relations (and great food)when we see it!

Roy, Liba, and I felt it was time to speak directly to CEOs about how they can work with organized labor rather than fight it at all costs. No better place to reach them than The Harvard Business Review. Hope it is helpful.: hbr.org/2023/07/the-la…

Worker interest in joining a union is at its highest in decades — public support for unions in the U.S. is as high as it was in 1965. Urged on by a new generation of labor leaders, many workers see unionization as a way to make their companies better. hbr.org/2023/07/the-la…

Another effort to promote actions to build a new social contract. It is the "summer of labor's discontent" so I thought it was worth posting this. Let's hope all the actions underway produce sustainable results.thehill.com/opinion/civil-…

I'm writing that this Labor Day is both different and potentially historic, depending on whether workers can keep up the momentum and gain ground on old and new issues, and maybe even starting to build a new social contract at work. Happy Labor Day!mitsloan.mit.edu/ideas-made-to-…

Ten years ago Market Basket employees walked out and won a 6-week battle to reinstate their CEO and save their store as a great place to work and to shop. Today's workers, executives, and policy makers should pause and learn from the Market Basket case. x.com/MIT_IWER/statu…

Massachusetts can break new ground by providing ride service workers the right to organize a union and engage in collective bargaining. It is on the ballot this November and I support it. commonwealthbeacon.org/opinion/vote-y…
