A big shout out to Kuharmy PhD student Demian Nunez, who was busy this Saturday morning setting out cucumber beetle traps at the farm. This semester, Demian got a paper published and three grants funded and is about to begin his written prelims this coming week.

Walking around I noticed a lot of dime-sized holes in lawns today after a rain last night in Blacksburg. They are likely caused by green June beetle larva coming out of the saturated soil and moving about on the surface. In a month they will pupate.

April 16, 2007. A day that you never forget if you're a Hokie. A day of the ultimate sorrow when we lost 32 of our best and brightest. But in the aftermath of that horrible day, the spirit and resolve of the Hokie Nation was on display and showed the world that evil would never

Shout out to a great Entomology Department Head, Tim Kring. In addition to fighting hard to make our department as strong as it can be, he graciously cooks all day some excellent salmon, beef, and other delicious items for the entire department, on his birthday no less.

Anyone else ever seen a golden retriever with spiked hair? I think Bella should have been a mascot for a 1980s punk rock band.

Solid day of fieldwork. Hand planted two corn trials assessing various seed treatments and in furrow sprays, plus planted two large plot wheat seed treatment tests to assess effects on soil arthropod fauna.

While some of the Kuharmy helped plant 700 cucumber seeds and 900 melon seeds this morning (thank you Taylore, Brian and Will) and Ben and Courtney getting the beds ready the day before, Demian was busy extracting DNA from cucumber beetles under the guidance of Dr. Scotty Yang.

Sampling vineyards in northern Virginia for spotted lanternfly with Tracy Leskeyโ€™s crew Torrie and John. Tons of these little devils. Note how many egg masses on the poles.
