This is a very helpful table by Fabian Virchow on how scholars should interpret participation at protest events, especially far-right activism. Numbers always need to be compared to expectations, countermobilization & other protests. From today's C-REX (@crexuio.bsky.social) & @PERIL_AU webinar. 💻

1. I deeply appreciate other researchers using our data. But as stated in our codebook, “the distribution of non-fatal events included in the dataset should not be seen as representative” and “only fatal events should be used when analysing trends.” This gives a different picture

2. There are several reasons why one should be careful using data on non-fatal events to estimate trends. First, available open access sources are fewer the further back in time we search.

3. Second, media coverage of RTV has improved incrementally over time.

4. Third, RTV coding practices have improved incrementally overt time, particularly after 2015, after which an entire team has been working on updating the dataset using new and more sophisticated methods.

6. In times like these, it is particularly important that researchers are careful about communicating honestly and openly about the data used in their analyses, including its weaknesses.

7. I welcome everyone to familiarize themselves with the publicly available version of the RTV dataset, but please read the codebook carefully before analyzing and presenting the data: sv.uio.no/c-rex/english/…

8. A new updated version of the dataset is currently in the making, including data for 2020. While we still have a lot of raw data to process, it is apparent that 2020 was not a particularly deadly year, while the number of vague plots increased substantially.
