In Border Antiquities (1818), Walter Scott wrote of a magic human skull in the ruins of Smailholm Tower. It was "possessed of such extraordinary powers of self-motion, that if carried to any distance it would be found next morning in its usual repository.” 🏰💀 #ScottishBorders

The Strix is a large-headed bird with transfixed eyes, rapacious beak, greyish white wings, and hooked claws. Strix's name was invoked in magic curses. Medea's rejuvenating concoction which she boiled in a cauldron used a long list of ingredients, including the strix's wings

It was #OTD 28th Oct AD 97 that the #Roman Emperor, #Nerva , was coerced by the Praetorian Guard to adopt #Trajan as his successor. Nerva was the first Roman #Emperor to be elected by the senate & his adoption of #Trajan ushered in the period of the adoptive 'Five Good Emperors'.

It’s #TrimontiumTuesday! As it gets colder and knitted sweaters return, check out these bone weaving combs from Trimontium. Used to comb wool before spinning it on a spindle whorl, they helped the Romans make warm garments. What would you make with them? 🤔#RomanArtefacts

Time for our weekly #hillfort clip. This time we have the Laws of Monifieth, an extraordinary site not far from #Dundee. The site incorporates an Iron Age Broch, a stone walled fort that predates the Broch & an ancient cup and ring marked stone.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

In 2001, the Newbridge Iron Age chariot burial was uncovered near Huly Hill, west of Edinburgh, excavated by Headland Archaeology. The first of its kind in Scotland, it links Iron Age Scotland to Continental Europe with its intact burial style. #IronAgeScotland

Happy #NationalFastFoodDay! Did you know ancient Romans had their own version of fast food? Thermopolia were street-side stalls offering ready-to-eat meals like meats, olives, & even fried dough! Customers grabbed takeout in clay bowls—Pompeii had over 90! #Trimontium

For our #hillfort clip this week, we travel to the Isle of Bute, #Scotland & Barone Hill, overlooking Rothesay. With stunning views , it has two lines of enclosure, representing separate phases of construction. Some facing stones that once dressed the walls can still be seen.

#Trimontium Tuesday... The Pugio, the smallest Roman weapon, around 7-11" long and 2" wide. The pugio was worn as a sidearm, on the left side of the soldier, used for close-quarters combat. Visit us here at #Trimontium in Melrose to see our original (& replica) side by side 😎
