Excited about this TroPeaCC collaboration for monitoring #carbon fluxes in Mpologoma #wetland in Uganda. A fantastic research visit at Makerere University DEM, MAK, made possible by the lovely hosts @charles_jjuuko, WERE DAVID and Frank Kansiime.

πŸ“’#PeatTwitter Look closely πŸ‘‡, there is now for the first time a #peatland sector in the Inter-Sectoral Impact Model Intercomparison Project (ISIMIP). Get in touch with us (Noah Smith Dr. Sarah Chadburn Angela Gallego-Sala or me) if you are interested @PeatMothership.

#EGU23 is again a great moment for #peatland researchers to gather in several peaty sessions. Consider submitting an abstract to our session on peatland #hydrology. Full details: meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EGU23/session/… See you in Vienna! #PeatTwitter Emma Shuttleworth

Interested in the present and future of tropical peatlands globally? The second of our two part review of the impacts of the #Anthropocene on tropical peatlands is now out and open access! #peatpaper sciencedirect.com/science/articl… 1/5

While this is not a peaty output, support from TroPeaCC is gratefully acknowledged. Despite the carbon gain via rapid tree growth, logged tropical forests may act as net carbon sources due to carbon release from soil and deadwood. pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn…

Today is #WorldWetlandsDay, time to celebrate these gorgeous, vital ecosystems! The aim of our project is to increase our understanding of #tropicalpeatland ecosystems: their distribution, carbon sink, methane fluxes, and their future in the changing climate.

How much wetland cover has been lost globally through conversion to human uses? What are the loss drivers & hotspots? Answers in new paper: rdcu.be/c5brO by @etiennefluet Beni Stocker @yuisheng @JoeRMelton @carBenPoulter Global HydroLAB et al. #wetlands 1/6

This #WetlandCup is fun, even though the tropical peat swamp didn't get beyond the first round. The good thing is that you just cannot fail to like every player in every round regardless of who wins - all #wetland types, their microforms and their plants are amazing.

We have a new #EddyCovariance tower measuring CO2 and CH4 fluxes at the gorgeous Mpologoma papyrus #wetland in Uganda, in collaboration with DEM, MAK (Makerere University) and Wetlands Management Department (MINISTRY OF WATER AND ENVIRONMENT πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¬ ). Thank you for the great team effort!

Really excited for a day all about peat today in our mini peat symposium 🌱 From peatlands in the high latitudes this morning to tropical peatlands this afternoon 🌎ExeterGeography TroPeaCC

Our post-lunch session of the peat symposium has started with some audience participation from Andy Baird asking what is peat and how does it form? He also asked ChatGPT with some interesting results, apparently Digibog and Holocene Peat Model have not made it to the masses yet!

It was a pleasure to host Paola Alarcon, Michel Mbasi and Charles Jjuuko, TroPeaCC team members from Colombia, DRC and Uganda, as visiting students in Exeter for a month. Fun and busy times with workshops and labwork. Thanks a lot coming and sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm!
