The takeaway here should not be that students are lazy. 18 year olds aren’t the problem. The problem is that universities have failed to make a persuasive case to their “customers” that they are educational institutions rather than companies that dispense “I’m employable” stamps.

Look, this is it. The humanities disciplines aren't toolkits, they're about being well-enough read that you have internalized a bunch of connections and can place new ideas in that web. They're also about being able to write convincingly on command. Exams are part of the process

Agree with every word. HS2 always wrong choice. I worked on "Eddington review", quoted here, which specifically warned against. Made worse by appalling lack of political leadership & planning insanity. We should be really, really angry. Political failure has made us much poorer
