Day two of 34th ECA - European Congress of Arachnology (2024). My team is still on 🔥 talking 🕷️🦂 #venoms! Today it was my brilliant PhD student Ludwig Dersch who presented his exciting work on antimicrobial 🕷️ peptides and their bioengineering. Newest paper from the lab, the first dissertation chapter of my amazing PhD student Lennart Schulte and the first outcome of my DFG public | @[email protected] grant „FunVen“ published in The Royal Society Open Science. Newest lab paper out in npj Biodiversity spearheaded by my stellar PhD student Josephine Dresler looking into the neglected realm of 🕷️ #venom #enzymes. When you look into 🕷️📖, you will read that their venoms are mostly composed by neurotoxins and that enzymatic compounds are rare.

📄 New Publication by our Animal Venomics Lab! Josephine Dresler et al. enlightened the toxinological dark matter of #spider #venom by the first systematic and comprehensive analysis of its #enzyme diversity. 🔓#OpenAccess Dresler et al. 2024 - doi.org/10.1038/s44185…

A LOEWE Centre Translational Biodiversity Genomics team around Dr. Tim Lüddecke & Josephine Dresler Josephine Dresler discovered a large diversity of #enzymes in spider #venom 🕷️. They could be of great value for bioeconomic applications. Publ. in npj Biodiversity: doi.org/10.1038/s44185… Press release: sgn.one/00k

This study reveals a hidden diversity of spider #venom enzymes, often overlooked compared to neurotoxins. There is a big gap between venom enzyme data in public databases & research. 1/4 #Biodiversity npj Journals Nature Portfolio nature.com/articles/s4418…

Many congratulations to my incredible PhD student Josephine Dresler for winning the best oral presentation award at this year’s Fraunhofer IME PhD retreat. This makes a back-to-back win for her at this event🤘😎 well deserved Josi! #proudPI LOEWE Centre Translational Biodiversity Genomics Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft ProLOEWE

A new #openaccess study by Giulia Zancolli and co. finds that some Uloboridae #spiders lack a #venom apparatus but toxins in their digestive fluids ensure prey immobilisation and digestion. bit.ly/4kP8TJZ #Evolution #Defensin
