Lost to history: my next 'walking the ground' mission is Longstop Hill - the tunnel, mosque, windmill, RAP, stables and more - locations and buildings abandoned, never visited since 1943. These 'gaps in history' need to be discovered and filled with knowledge! #TunisianCampaign

Detail from Stuart Brown's wonderful 'Longstop' painting. I wonder if it's based on the actual location? I shall find out shortly....#TunisianCampaign

Just took an international train from Annaba in #Algeria to Tunis in #Tunisia (reopened Aug 2024 after 29 years). Breathtaking scenery in early May, very green and full of flowers! One of the world's great train journeys, not to be missed! The Man in Seat 61 #iloverailwaytrips

It's #MapMonday: no wonder they named this hill 'Grenadier Hill' given the first occupants were The Grenadier Guards - here's their first layout. #TunisianCampaign

OTD 1943 - the first WW2 unconditional surrender - Tunisia. Here's my take on the military impact and what it meant to the Allies. [video from 2024]. #TunisianCampaign

OTD 1943: Axis surrender in Tunisia. The day before the German commander insisted that he would not be taken by 'black' troops. He was taken by the 4th Indian Division and some of the aircraft at that time were flown by Tuskegee airmen. (video is 2024) #TunisianCampaign

We often forget the strategic importance of North Africa for the British. This importance did not harm the common interests of the Allies, contrary to what some American historians have claimed.

This week in Tunisia 1943: a mad scramble for luxury Villas in the fashionable suburbs of Tunis. This is American Lt Gen Carl "Tooey" Spaatz view from 'his' Ennejma Ezzahra Palace. Ike was a frequent visitor to play Bridge card games. #PalaceAtWar (More info winkie williamson)

25 janvier 1944. Italie. 28 ans.

My #ThursdayThought: many veterans returned to Tunisian battlefields e.g.Eisenhower 1959. Also Major John Lambert, The Grenadier Guards, veteran of Longstop. In 1979 he was the UK Ambassador (he even has a passing resemblance to the present UK in Tunisia 🇬🇧🇹🇳 Ambassador!). #TunisianCampaign

This week I've been in Croatia. It seems Axis bunkers are everywhere along the coast. Did they call this the 'Adriatic Wall' by any chance?

Sad to see any WW2 memorial defaced, I saw this one in Croatia earlier this week. Can't tell if it's for Anti-Nazi or Pro-Nazi forces (Croatia had a very complicated WW2 to put it mildly). Grateful for any help! FYI Dr Peter Caddick-Adams #StandwithUkraine
