Charities – it’s okay to fail. We want to give charities the opportunity to experiment, and this can lead to unexpected outcomes. And we believe it’s the unexpected outcomes that can often lead to big breakthroughs. That’s why we actively encourage failure.

We believe the most complex problems are best solved by sharing diverse perspectives. A key theme across the work we fund is providing a foundation for collaboration across multiple disciplines – private enterprises, NGOs, educators, government bodies.

Driving sustainable change requires the courage to break from old ways of doing things. At the Turner Kirk Trust, we believe in empowering charities to test fresh approaches. It can be transformative when charities are given this freedom to innovate – without fear of failure.

If you do things in the same way, you'll get the same results. When you approach things differently, you open the door for new, innovative solutions. Dr. Ewan Kirk explains how charities can do this. ⬇️ #PermissionToFail #STEM #conservation #ECD #philanthropy

Philanthropy is good at raising money for doing things a little bit differently. Dr Ewan Kirk explains how budding philanthropists, or charities, can take advantage of this. 👇

At the Turner Kirk Trust, we believe STEM research holds the key to solving some of the world’s most pressing challenges – from tackling energy poverty in Africa to pioneering breakthroughs in big data and fundamental mathematics.

Philanthropy should spark change — but what happens when the problems are too big for any one person or organisation to solve? → Education → Healthcare → Climate change These are government-scale challenges. So where does philanthropy fit in?

Healthy childhoods build stronger societies. Early childhood development (ECD) is one of the most overlooked, yet highest-impact areas for philanthropic investment. That’s why it’s one of the Turner Kirk Trust’s main areas of focus.

At the Turner Kirk Trust, we leverage philanthropy as a catalyst for innovation, collaboration and change. That involves far more than just funding. We act as strategic partners to charities, supporting organisations to build sustainable, scalable models for change.

Of course you want your project to succeed. But if it all goes wrong, then that's okay. At the Turner Kirk Trust, we want to reassure you that: → We won't think badly of you → It won't impact chances of future funding → You will have learnt something valuable

At the Turner Kirk trust, we aim for our work to act as a springboard for wide-scale, long-term impact. That looks like: → Funding STEM research → Building infrastructure that enables communities to support themselves → Creating self-sustaining models

We let the charities we fund run the show. Because they're the experts in what they do. A donor might be an expert in business, or healthcare, or mathematics. But they shouldn't get involved in designing the projects and programmes they donate to.

If you set out to prove a theory and expect success, then the outcome is often predictable. But we want people to experiment and find things that no one could've expected. That's when breakthroughs happen. So we make it clear: 'success' isn't mandatory.

Some people think philanthropy and imagine wealthy people reaching into their pockets and signing cheques. But there are plenty of other ways to make a positive impact by sharing your time, knowledge or skills.
