🚨 New NAEP scores were released today and they are a disaster. 12th grade, plus 8th grade science. 🚨 The headline: “High school seniors had the worst reading scores since 1992” Here is a thread 🧵 of the early reports:

Every four years, The Nation’s Report Card (NAEP) provides insights about how 12th grade students are doing in math and reading. So, how are high school seniors doing? 2024 #NAEP results are in. #NAEP24 youtube.com/watch?feature=…

Lowest ever 12th-grade reading & math scores on NAEP, gaps widening.... As a parent of HS & college kids, these results are sobering but not surprising (COVID shutdowns + cell phones & social media + absent kids + less accountability?!) and must be a call to action. Via

Been thinking a lot about how our students are leaving high school just not ready to engage and be successful in college-level coursework. These results show that this is a national problem. In Texas we tell 63% of students that they are "college ready" in math. When you look

Some students don’t see themselves as capable of pursuing math careers. When that’s due to sexism or bias, we must eradicate it. But let’s remember that a major reason kids don’t become “math people” is it’s hard to like something you struggle at. We must teach them better.

One of the reasons graduation rates should not be the ultimate measure of success for high schools. Weakening grad requirement have lasting consequences for students.

Dale Chu (@dale_chu) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Yes it matters! Handing out diplomas to kids who can barely read is a breach of warranty—it’s lying to parents, students & employers about what a diploma represents. High grad rates are something adults love to celebrate, but in doing so, we’re prioritizing optics over outcomes.
