The literacy crisis isn’t just about “literature.” My students struggle to read and summarize NYT opinion pieces.

this is right: humanities education is about *expertise* in that much-hated thing, culture - the signs that this expertise is wanting are everywhere

"critical thinking" was always cope from people who would rather compete for favor from metrics-obsessed bean-counters than take collective labor action to defend the humanities entirely on their own terms, as human goods to which students have a right

Five years ago today, the launch of this magazine changed my life. Now, we're sharing our brand-new fifteenth issue. I think it's one of the best we've ever done. I hope you read it, and I'm endlessly grateful for all the support that's brought us here. thedriftmag.com/issue/issue-15/

pushback against exams and even homework was really confusing to me until I realized that many of you seem to believe “studying” is not a necessary part of “learning” — this is wrong

Exactly--it degrades the value of the content itself because at some point, academics decided that literature and culture were not gonna make it as legit subjects. Even Fish gets this wrong when he argues literature is about asking questions. It's not. It's about the material.

Tyler Austin Harper There’s a history here! Check out my book. US tech industries have long found it worth their while to speak the language of progressive educators. Helps burnish the industry’s democratizing image while building the market for new tech in schools. direct.mit.edu/books/monograp

The US’s most advanced stealth bombers dropping the US’s biggest, baddest bombs managed to set back Iran’s nuclear program about 3% as much as Obama’s nuclear agreement with Iran did. Once again: great job neocons.

What's happening in NYC is a blaringly loud message to those in the Dem establishment who still cling to old politics, recite focus-grouped talking points, and are too afraid to say what needs to be said. We have a lot to learn from Zohran Kwame Mamdani and his campaign.

A 33-year old socialist didn't just win a mayoral primary. He defeated a former governor backed by Bill Clinton, Mike Bloomberg, DoorDash, the real estate lobby, and $25 million in corporate PAC money.

How is this consistent w the message that we can’t run anyone like Kamala again who has this past bc of the ACLU questionnaire? I agree w the point here but can’t square it w everything else that comes out of this camp.

A big L tonight for the Wall Street “Democrats” who deregulated & bailed out too big to fail banks, shipped jobs overseas, pushed never ending wars & claimed that taxing the rich to fund childcare, housing, groceries & public transit would be some kind of dystopian nightmare.

Instead of doing whatever this is I would maybe spend some time thinking about why the populist corner of the Dem coalition has popular politicians people find inspiring, and why the neoliberal corner doesn’t have a single one who could draw a crowd big enough to fill a Denny’s.

It's 12:30 AM in Vegas — 3:30 in NYC — but we sometimes work late at Silver Bulletin. So publishing my NYC mayor take now rather than waiting for the morning. Probably some typos. This was a really impressive win by Zohran and Democrats will dismiss it at their peril.

Smartphones are addictive devices that are increasingly engineered to hook us on brain-rotting short form video - not an exciting new form of literacy
