Great talk by Maria O'Neill on the fantastic effort by Ballymore Eustace community groups controlling the invasive plant Himalayan balsam on the River Liffey in 2024. #kildarebioconf Kildare County Council Sch. Biol. & Env. Sc

We have been controlling and monitoring Lysichiton americanus on ~15kms of the River Liffey since 2021. Always a pleasure surveying with our colleagues in The HSI A chilly night but still both the native Smooth newt and invasive Alpine newt out under the ice! UCD Science Sch. Biol. & Env. Sc. Funding from National Parks and Wildlife Service

These non native Alpine Newts occur at very high densities in bog habitats in the midlands of Ireland. Our Environmental Biology and Zoology students out surveying last night with The HSI . UCD Science Sch. Biol. & Env. Sc

Our Zoology students instructed by The HSI swabbing Alpine Newts for Chytrid fungus. Surveys in protected bogs indicate high density of Alpine Newts. Please report any sightings to Biodiversity Ireland National Parks and Wildlife Service Sch. Biol. & Env. Sc UCD Science

Great progress controlling Skunk cabbage Lysichiton americanus along the River Liffey in last 5yrs! Native plants returning after controls applied since 2021. Funding support each year from Kildare County Council and Department of Housing, Local Government & Heritage National Parks and Wildlife Service Sch. Biol. & Env. Sc UCD Science

It's taken five years of control to reduce the seed bank of skunk cabbage after eradication efforts started in 2021 along the River Liffey. Continued support from Kildare County Council through LBAF funding Department of Housing, Local Government & Heritage National Parks and Wildlife Service. Manual removal is tough going!
