Mongolia 2025: It was a long drive back towards Ulaanbaatar. Our next camping spot was Gun Lake. A small lake but amazingly we did find another single 1s Relict Gull + a Grey-headed Lapwing. I also photographed this Mongolian Lark the next morning. #BirdsSeenIn2025

Mongolia 2025: Lunch stop at Takhilt Lake on our way back towards Ulaanbaatar. This Crested (Oriental) Honey Buzzard dropped in for a drink before carrying on its journey. #BirdsSeenIn2025

Mongolia 2025: Hustai National Park (HNP) Przewalski’s Horse. Declared extinct in the wild in 1969, these beautiful horses have been reintroduced. HNP is stated as the only place in the world where these can now be seen within their historic range. I am glad we called in.

Mongolia 2025: I have finished processing photos - I hope you have enjoyed the ones I have shared. Some more Pallas’s Sandgrouse in the Gobi Desert Often seen flying in pairs although some luck needed to get both birds in focus within the frame! #BirdsSeenIn2025

Despite being an escape (bearing jess remains or ring) it was worth the short detour earlier in the week to see this presumed Saker falcon or hybrid currently present near Portsdown, Hampshire. It was flying around hunting pigeons - lots of prey remains visible in the field.

I recently returned from a tough but very rewarding trip to West Papua. So many great birds seen with this Wilson’s Bird of Paradise being the top bird of the trip for me. A dream come true….. #BirdsSeenIn2025

The female Wilson’s Bird of Paradise is beautiful in her own way too, just not as colourful as the male. I love the matching blue cap though! (West Papua Aug/Sep 2025) #BirdsSeenIn2025

The male Wilson’s Bird of Paradise got rather excited pushing out his wonderful green throat/chest feathers when he successfully attracted this female into his display area. (West Papua Aug/Sep 2025). #BirdsSeenIn2025

Male Blue-black Kingfisher. (West Papua Aug/Sep 2025). This was actually the very first bird I photographed on day 1 of the trip! Noted in the field guide as “very difficult to see” this one was quite the opposite and posed rather nicely! #BirdsSeenIn2025

Western Long-beaked Echidna. Klalik, West Papua, Aug 2025. Our skilled local guides tracked this down at night giving us great views. We also saw another at Malagufuk again found by the skilled local guides during one of the night walks.

King Bird-of-Paradise (West Papua, Aug/Sep 2025) Typically high up in the canopy made a challenge for photography. #BirdsSeenIn2025

Papuan Dwarf Kingfisher. (West Papua Aug/Sep 2025). We saw a few of these tiny little beauties however most views were brief and obscured. I was very pleased when this one perched nicely for some photos. #BirdsSeenIn2025

Forest Bittern (West Papua, Aug-Sep 2025) News of a potentially twitchable bird had us making plans as we left Malagufuk. A blocked road due to a large landslide following heavy rain stopped us 🫣. Luckily a second chance a few days later was successful 👍. #BirdsSeenIn2025

New Guinea Bronzewing (West Papua, Aug/Sep 2025) Whilst waiting for the Forest Bittern to show we asked the local guide if he had any sites for this shy, rare pigeon. We were amazed when he said he could show us one on the nest a few miles up the road! #BirdsSeenIn2025
