I also congratulated President Cyril Ramaphosa 🇿🇦 on his #G20 Presidency under the bold themes of Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability. UNAIDS Global is already working closely with the G20 Health Working Group, and together with our Global Council on Inequalities, are ready to support

I urge 🇿🇦 to ensure the #G20 Health Ministers’ Declaration & G20 Summit Declaration to include a strong, actionable commitment to global solidarity in the fight against the pandemics of today—including HIV—and to help build our capacities to fight the pandemics of tomorrow. #PPPR

South Africa is a powerful example of #HIVresponse resilience: Government & community both working incredibly hard to drive harder & protect the hard-won gains of recent decades. 🇿🇦’s success sends a powerful signal to other countries. I applaud 🇿🇦’s commitment to #endAIDS! 👏🏾👏🏾

Happy Youth Day 🇿🇦 As we honour the brave of 1976, the struggle to end inequalities continues: - over 1/3rd of new HIV infections(2023) occurred among young people aged 15–24, especially young🚺. - Many youth still face HIV prevention, education&mental health support barriers.

I visited Itireleng Community Health Centre in Soweto last week, to learn more about how the PEPFAR funding freeze has impacted 🇿🇦's #HIVresponse. Community members from TAC & Ritshidze shared they have been facing: ✅ suspension of outreach services ✅ loss of critical staff

Winnie Byanyima (@winnie_byanyima) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Community representatives and staff who remain at Itireleng Community Health Centre 🇿🇦, explained how the funding loss has led to: ✖️ decreased HIV testing services ✖️ increased waiting times ✖️ decrease in medication Pick-up-Points ✖️ struggle with tracing people & linking to

Comrade Winnie Byanyima and UNAIDS Global UNAIDS South Africa have always been critical partners in community-led monitoring. We need to amplify, not reduce our work at this critical juncture. Data from Itireleng CHC and other health facilities will be highlighted in the data we are analyzing

While the funding cuts have been devastating, I am eager to explore & support their new approach called ‘corner-to-corner’ - aimed at integrating health services, to take the facility into the heart of the community! We know when communities lead, HIV responses succeed. #endAIDS

South Africa is also set make progress in its HIV response through the #CloseTheGap treatment campaign, aiming to reach an additional 1.1 million people living with HIV with life-saving treatment. 🇿🇦 #endAIDS

While the FDA has approved #Lenacapavir and we celebrate this win 🙌 we must continue to advocate for its affordability. This is especially critical when we know the highest number of people living with HIV reside in some of the most unequal countries& are the most vulnerable.

Complete protection against HIV with two injections a year. And research shows it could cost just $25 per person per year. But Gilead Sciences is going to charge more than 1,000 times that! Millions of poor girls and young women in Africa, who are most at risk of HIV

UNAIDS Executive Director Winnie Byanyima met with President Cyril Ramaphosa 🇿🇦, National Department of Health Minister & communities in 🇿🇦, praising South Africa’s leadership and resilience in the HIV response. Her visit also coincided with a #G20 meeting on health equity. Watch⤵️

🔊Sadly, the funding cuts have led to greater vulnerability especially for adolescent girls&young women. NACOSA provided services to these vulnerable populations incl. survivors of #GBV. LISTEN to Mohamed Motala, the ExD in discussion with Frontline AIDS & UNAIDS Global.

According to Bhekisisa, if 🇿🇦 loses all of its NIH funding, the country could lose 70% of its medical research capacity. UNAIDS Global is very concerned by the impact of these funding cuts on the development of an effective HIV vaccine. South Africa is a global leader in HIV

The global HIV response is in crisis. Clinics have closed. Prevention services have halted. People are losing access to lifesaving medicines. The disruption is deadly. But we won’t give up! Read why—in my Bloomberg interview with Mishal Husain 👉🏾bloom.bg/4l1UkCX

During my mission to South Africa last week, I saw firsthand what the disruptions caused by global funding cuts mean for 🇿🇦's #HIVresponse at the community level. They are being felt by people most affected by HIV, including adolescent girls & young women. I commend South Africa

It is now more critical than ever before to work towards eliminating stigma&discrimination. Less stigma&less discrimination = greater access to healthcare for all. Imagine stepping into your community, a health facility/workplace without fear! Health rights=human rights 🙌

Deep appreciation for my meeting with the UNAIDS Global Country & Regional Teams during my mission to 🇿🇦. We had honest, difficult conversations about the painful changes underway due to global funding cuts to the #HIVresponse. I was deeply moved by the teams’ resilience, grace, and
