After 14 years of conflict, half a million Syrians have made it back home to Syria. Not without challenges—but with hope. Their voluntary return is a reminder: with the right support, recovery is possible.

"I’m happy to be back in school." Children who are forced to flee conflict carry a burden far beyond their years. But safety is only the beginning. With access to education, these young minds are given the chance to dream, to heal—and to become whoever they want to be.

Ozaz is 1 of nearly 700k Sudanese refugees registered in 🇪🇬 & 1 of 12m displaced by the 🇸🇩 conflict. She brings her son for a medical check-up at a UNHCR-supported clinic. Lives depend on sustained support, but critical services like this are at risk due to severe underfunding.

"Tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today." Malcolm X Osama, a Sudanese refugee and 2nd-year med student at Cairo University, lives by these words. With support from the DAFI scholarship funded by Mastercard Foundation, he's rebuilding his future through education.

Refugee-led orgs like Balqees & Zaghawa are at the forefront of GBV response. Last week Canada in Egypt Norway in Egypt and Libya Embajada de España en Egipto/ سفارة إسبانيا في مصر UK in Egypt Swiss Embassy Cairo saw how they support survivors & empower communities. Despite operating on limited funding, their work is indispensable.

Refugee-led organizations are the lifeline of their communities — offering essential services, supporting survivors of gender-based violence, creating paths to self-reliance. With 🇨🇭Swiss Development and Cooperation's support, UNHCR Egypt & partners continue their work even amid funding challenges.

Thousands are fleeing Darfur into Chad. Many are children arriving alone, dehydrated and malnourished. Camps are overwhelmed. Families are sleeping in extreme heat with no shelter or food. Urgent aid is needed. unh.cr/6448ccc04

Thinking of United Nations colleagues who lost their lives in yet another attack in Sudan. Four million people have now fled Sudan in search of safety in other countries. This is a tragic example of what they're running from. My heart breaks for the people affected by this senseless war.

This #WorldRefugeeDay is not business as usual. Conflicts are escalating. Aid is shrinking. But one thing hasn’t changed: refugees need our solidarity to live in safety, with dignity and to rebuild their lives. Let’s come together with refugees today and always.
