I am in Lebanon, heading to Syria for #WorldRefugeeDay. Over two million Syrian refugees and displaced have returned home since December—a sign of hope amid rising regional tensions. This proves that we need political solutions—not another wave of instability and displacement.

Today is #WorldRefugeeDay. I am spending it in Syria with some of the 600,000 people who have returned from neighbouring countries after 14 years of conflict. Syria today is where returning Syrians — given security, opportunities and support — can finally stop being refugees.

In Dara’a, I witnessed the return of Syrian refugees from Jordan. I was humbled by their brave choice to rebuild their lives in a place devastated by war. As one of them said, “we return because we love our country”. UNHCR works with the authorities in supporting returnees.

المفوض السامي Filippo Grandi: "في درعا، شهدتُ عودة بعض اللاجئين السوريين من الأردن. تأثرتُ بقرارهم الشجاع بالعودة وإعادة بناء حياتهم في مكان دمرته الحرب. أحد العائدين قال لي: ’نعود لأننا نحب بلدنا’. تعمل المفوضية مع السلطات السورية لتقديم الدعم للعائدين."

An awful attack has been carried out at a Damascus church, with many killed and injured. On behalf of UNHCR staff in Syria — where I’m visiting —condolences to the families of the victims; wishes of prompt recovery to the injured; and sincere solidarity with all Syrian people.

المفوض السامي لشؤون اللاجئين: "هجوم مروّع في كنيسة بدمشق خلّف الكثير من القتلى والجرحى. بالنيابة عن موظفي المفوضية في سوريا التي أزورها حالياً، أتوجه بأحر التعازي لأسر الضحايا، وأتمنى الشفاء العاجل للجرحى، وأعبر عن تضامني التام مع كل الشعب السوري."

In Aleppo and Idlib, I visited returnees supported by UNHCR with small business grants - like Mohammad with his falafel shop. We are also rebuilding houses, helping with transport, providing emergency cash support. But it’s still very little compared to the extent of the needs.

المفوض السامي: "في حلب وإدلب، التقيت بسوريين عائدين ممن حصلوا على منح المفوضية للمشاريع الصغيرة- مثل محمد الذي أعاد افتتاح محله لبيع الفلافل. نقوم أيضًا بإعادة بناء المنازل، وتوفير وسائل النقل، وتقديم المساعدات النقدية الطارئة. لكن ذلك لا يزال قليلًا جدًا مقارنة بحجم الاحتياجات."

Sincere thanks to Foreign Minister Al-Shaibani and to the Governors of Dera’a, Aleppo and Idlib for receiving me during my visit to Syria. I reaffirmed that United Nations organisations, including UNHCR, will support them as they lead the country towards a more peaceful, prosperous future.

I wrapped up my visit to Syria. I found many challenges but also a fragile hope. To sustain it, we urgently need: Emergency aid to support people returning to destroyed homes and lives. Long-term investments to help rebuild a country emerging from a long war. Both are vital.

The world is full of crises and conflict. But there is also hope. At the border of Syria and Lebanon, High Commissioner Filippo Grandi saw a ray of hope. He saw refugees who are finally realizing a dream held by so many forced to flee: the dream of returning home.

أزمات وصراعات كثيرة تعصف بالعالم، لكن الأمل دائماً موجود. من الحدود بين سوريا ولبنان، كان المفوض السامي شاهداً على شعاعٍ من هذا الأمل: عودة اللاجئين السوريين إلى ديارهم. لقد تمكنوا -أخيراً- من تحقيق الحلم الذي يراود الكثير من النازحين قسراً بالعودة.
