Well, well, well, we’re back at Peninsula Farm for another year of field school #UWAdigs. This year we’re taking a second crack at the well, and searching for the old homestead garden. #Archaeology

The project focuses on Murujuga - a highly significant rock art province on the Pilbara coast of northwest Australia. Aboriginal people have lived here for 50,000+ years, and over that time inscribed the landscape with more than 1 million rock engravings.

Murujuga is now a coastal archipelago, but this has only been true for around 8 thousand years. 22 thousand years ago, at the height of the ice age, it was 160km from the ocean, because sea level was 130m lower than present. How did people respond to this climate change?

Thanks to the Murujuga Aboriginal Corporation, who are key collaborators on our research. This is all part of the Dating Murujuga’s Dreaming ARC project, which brings experts together from a variety of fields to date and contextualise Murujuga’s past. crarm.uwa.edu.au/murujuga-dating
