Today I was at a protest here at @umich. Like many others, I see the govt's detention of Columbia Uni activist Mahmoud Khalil as an assault on free speech & an alarming infringement of the rights we all must defend. Thanks to TAHRIR Coalition for putting the protest together.

I’m the new chair of the Faculty Senate here University of Michigan. I am deeply troubled by our state Attorney General’s statement here. In it she defends her misconceived campaign against student protestors & misrepresents their character and actions. Dana Nessel metrotimes.com/news/nessel-de…

I am very sorry to hear of the passing of the great Ngugi wa Thiongo. Here's a thread I did last year about his early career as a journalist in Nairobi in the 1960s. From the start, he saw things from the vantage point of the oppressed. May he rest in peace.

Today is Martyrs Day here in Uganda. The Uganda Martyrs were the first black saints of modern times. Last year colleagues and I laid on an exhibition to celebrate the 60th anniversary of their canonization. Here's the film we made to accompany the show. youtube.com/watch?v=lGNla7…
