Went to graduation yesterday - I might have thought that I was forever in the applause section, but was given this at the end of the show…. Thanks hugely to the awesome colleagues at Physics at the University of Auckland and University of Auckland | Waipapa Taumata Rau and our awesome students, without whom none of this would happen

Delighted to be a winner of one of this year's national Aotearoa Tertiary Educator Awards -- and huge thanks to the awesome crew at Physics at the University of Auckland and the great colleagues all across University of Auckland | Waipapa Taumata Rau who made this work possible. ako.ac.nz/programmes-and…

We are happy to announce that the Department has two new professors! Dr Fred Vanholsbeeck and Dr Jan Eldridge have both been promoted to professor! Congratulations to them both! It's going to be exciting to see what they do next! Inugral lectures will be in 2023!

Congratulations to Dr Fred Vanholsbeeck who is the incoming director of the Dodd-Walls Centre centre.

Stoked with some Smart Ideas funding to develop soft microparticle mechanics with @fredvanh Volker Nock Davoud Zare and other excellent collaborators ... first order of business, we're recruiting for 2 PhD students! See: findaphd.com/phds/project/m… and findaphd.com/phds/project/m…

Our recent research on ultrashort dissipative Raman solitons in coherently-driven Kerr resonators has just been published online with Springer Nature in Nature Photonics. What Anne L'Huillier said during the The Nobel Prize interview, "Basic research is very important... because it takes time to arrive at a point where we start to see applications...," reminds me of "Defending basic research" Nature Photonics by John Dudley 🫡go.nature.com/3RTCV3O

Congratulations to Physics at the University of Auckland Professor Nicola Gaston, who was awarded the Thomson Medal by the Royal Society Te Apārangi for transformative leadership for the research, science & innovation sector, and as a ‘driver of change’ towards equity for women in science. bit.ly/3QRJ4MI

Congrats @nicgaston and Justin Hodgkiss on being elected Fellows of RSNZ ! Seems to be no news item yet, but there they are - in the Class of '23. royalsociety.org.nz/who-we-are/our… #nzscience @MacDiarmidInsti Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington Physics at the University of Auckland

The UN General Assembly just declared 2025 the International Year of Quantum Science & Technology! Ghana, Mexico, 70 other countries, the APS team with Fracchiolla Claudia PhD 🇻🇪🇻🇪🇻🇪 and Joe Niemela all deserve our huge thanks for making this happen. Now we start making plans😀

“During Quantum Year, we invite all Australians to learn how this fascinating branch of science has transformed our understanding of Nature and the Universe – and how the technologies built on these principles transform our world,” says Nick Menicucci, Australian Institute of Physics Quantum chair

Announcement! The Opening Ceremony of the International Year of Quantum Science & Technology on 4-5 February is being broadcast live. Programme PDF here: articles.unesco.org/sites/default/… More info here: unesco.org/en/articles/op… Webcast link here: webcast.unesco.org/events/2025-02…
