Very proud of Panos, who presented our joint work with Dr Attili on the aerodynamics of free-falling disks, and Dr Liu, who presented our collaboration on controlling tip vortices with permeability! Yabin Liu European Research Council (ERC) School of Engineering

New PIV images from our Dandidrone Lab showcasing the stunning separated vortex ring over a natural dandelion, captured by Dr. Aditya Potnis! More beautiful images and fascinating physics to follow soon... #dandidrone #aerodynamics School of Engineering

We are excited to share that Prof. Viola has been appointed Adjunct Professor at the Engineering Department of the Alma Mater Studiorum UniversitĂ di Bologna, the oldest university in the world! Ingegneria DIN Unibo UniversitĂ di Bologna

Congrats to Dr Ulysse Dhomé for defending his PhD KTH Royal Institute of Technology. From left, the opponent Prof. Muggiasca (Polimi), the internal Prof. Wittberg, the chair Sigray, the supervisor Prof. Kuttenkeuler, and the external members Dr Hansen (DNV) and Prof. Viola.

Interested in PIV of small flyers such as micro robots inspired by the dandelion seed? Apply for a PhD or Research Associate (postdoctoral) position at lnkd.in/dMexGRd The Research Associate position closes on 15th October. European Research Council (ERC) #DANDIDRONE

I am excited to be back in the FloWave Ocean Energy Research Facility of the School of Engineering to test our new blades as part of the EPSRC-funded project Morphing Blades (lnkd.in/ed7uizAs). The blades' pattern is designed to perform Digital Image Correlation. With Dr Anna Young, @aero_anna.

I am delighted that our image of the Separated Vortex Ring in the wake of a permeable disk has won the ARCHER2 Image Competition 2024! This work is part of the European Research Council (ERC) project Dandidrone (VOILAb.eng.ed.ac.uk/dandidrone) hosted by the School of Engineering . Well done Chandan Bose @ BioFSILab UoB !

There were some amazing visitors at the lab meeting today, making 19 participants in total, including former members Dr Cathal Cummins and Dr Daniele Certini and closest collaborators Dr Antonio Attili and Dr Francesco Giorgio-Serchi. Cathal Cummins 🌻

I am delighted to announce that I have been elected a member of the Executive Committee of the EPSRC UK Robotics and Autonomous Systems (RAS) Network, which was established in March 2015 with the mission to provide academic leadership in RAS across the UK School of Engineering

I am delighted to announce that our new paper on gust alleviation by passive pitch has been published in JFS: authors.elsevier.com/sd/article/S08…. The paper reveals that even the most abrupt gusts can be hugely mitigated by simply passively pitching the foil. School of Engineering Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council

APS DFD meeting at Salt Lake City, with Chandan Bose. I presented the work of JB Souppez on the aerodynamics of yacht sails, also mentioning the past work of Abel Arredondo published with Holger Babinsky at Cambridge.
