Fall activities are picking up at the center this week with soybean harvest and soil sampling.

Dr. Zhang's lab took part in the 2025 Eastern Virginia AREC Soybean Field Day, held at Eastern Virginia Ag Research & Extension Center. The annual event brings together researchers, farmers, and industry professionals to exchange knowledge and highlight ongoing advancements in soybean production and breeding.

Field activities are full throttle with soybean harvest and field burn down in preparation for wheat planting.

Today, we are harvesting an on-farm corn variable rate fertility trial. The purpose of this study is to examine the return on investment when applying variable rate pre-plant fertility compared to a uniform rate. This project is funded by a VT CALS Integrated Seed Grant.

Beautiful fall morning for the 2026 wheat crop to go in the ground!

Busy week around the center with wheat planting, soybean harvest, and faba bean planting.

We planted three faba bean trials in King and Queen County including seeding rate, nitrogen, and weed management studies. This is part of a USDA-funded project focused on the introduction of faba bean as a winter seed crop with benefits for the Mid-Atlantic cropping systems.

Wrapping up small grain planting this week with Dr. Nicholas Santantonio and the small grains breeding team.

The VT soybean agronomy program led by Carrie Ortel at VT Tidewater AREC has launched the Soybean Variety Selection Tool. It allows you to sort by location, maturity group, or cropping system. Check it out here as you make plans for 2026! bit.ly/4hITtq0
