Richard R. John is talking about James Fly. This is a perfect opportunity to mention Victor Pickard's exceptionally insightful book America's Battle for Media Democracy, which anyone interested in the FCC and comms policy should buy. cambridge.org/core/books/ame…

Robert McChesney dedicated his life to challenging corporate owned media. The best way to honor his legacy, Dean Baker argues, is to fight for democratic alternatives. inthesetimes.com/article/robert…

Sanders: He now wants to take away CBS’s license because they did a story that criticized him. Oh my word, CBS criticized him! Oh, let’s drive them out of business, how terrible… If you can’t take criticism, get out of the political process. This is a democracy

Expanding public media doesn’t mean building state propaganda machines or censorship bureaus. Public media can be democratic and responsive to the needs of local communities in ways that for-profit media isn’t. jacobin.com/2025/05/public…

While Rick Scott was CEO of Columbia/HCA, the company defrauded Medicare and Medicaid so extensively that it earned itself 14 felony convictions and $1.7 billion in fines. The gall it takes for him to say that low-income people should be kicked off Medicaid is breathtaking.

So much recent media coverage has focused on how Musk is leaving the White House & politics, how he disapproves of Trump's bill, etc. But the story we should be hearing is how Musk has caused tremendous lasting damage to our government. And for that he must never be forgiven.

"The administration has terminated more than 80% of USAID grants. "A BU global health professor estimated these cuts have already resulted in about 300,000 deaths, most of them of children. "That is what Musk’s foray into politics accomplished." nytimes.com/2025/05/30/opi…

We also need to start centering on our political horizons the fact that after so much destruction it will be necessary to rebuild many of our core institutions from the ground up. We should begin to imagine now what that might look like in the post Trump era.
