‘Nora Barlow’, one of my favourite Aquilegias. I’m growing some bare roots on in pots at the moment, and I can’t wait until they flower. Hopefully next year!

A tale is told of a Lilac tree that grew weary of life and ceased to bloom. A child, who loved its spring blossoms, saw its sorrow and tended it with care. Touched by such gentle #kindness, the Lilac stirred from slumber and burst into fragrant bloom. #folklore #FlowersOnFriday

Delphiniums are a jewel of the summer garden with their tall spires of blue, purple, white, and lavender. When they bloom, they’re pure magic, and beloved by bees, butterflies, and gardeners alike. I photographed these today in the Trials Garden RHS Garden Wisley. #DailyBotanicalBeauty

In Dracula, Van Helsing orders wild garlic flowers from Amsterdam, filling Lucy’s room with their sharp scent and placing a garland at her neck to ward off the vampire. But her mother, pitying the girl, removes the “horrible, strong-smelling flowers”… and doom slips in.

In Daphne du Maurier’s #gothic novel Rebecca, red rhododendrons bloom everywhere around Manderley — symbols of Rebecca’s lingering presence & control. Their vivid, unsettling beauty haunts the house, foreshadowing death, destruction, and the fire that consumes it. #FolkloreSunday

A pretty combination of fragrant pink roses (Rosa ‘Cariad’), with white love-in-a-mist (Nigella) growing between, and purple perennial geraniums behind, photographed in the rose garden RHS Garden Wisley yesterday. Inspiration for my own garden! #DailyBotanicalBeauty #gardening

An Oriental Poppy reveals its dark, velvety heart as it unfurls its silky coral-pink petals. At its centre, the poppy’s crowned seed pod sits like a starburst, ringed with delicate purple filigree and a halo of inky stamens. Have a great #BankHoliday everyone! #flowers #gardening

When I was a child my grandmother told me, “cherries keep you young.” In Chinese myth they symbolize immortality, and the Phoenix of Greek myth, reborn from ashes, is said to sleep on cherry blossom. As I turn another year older today, perhaps I should eat some! #FairytaleTuesday

When a maiden died on the day she was to be married, she asked for lilac to be laid on her grave. Mourners placed purple lilac, but it rooted and bloomed white. No matter how often they replanted it, it turned white — and so the first white lilac came to be. #FolkloreThursday

Cyane, a handsome youth, adored blue #flowers and spent his time gathering & weaving them into garlands for Flora, the goddess of flowers. When his life slipped away in a field one day, she transformed him into the flower he loved most, the cornflower, Centaurea cyanus.

“Seed packets to begin with, pink and azure, Sifting lightness and small jittery promise: Lupin spires, erotics of the future, Lip-brush of the blue and earth’s deep purchase.” - from ‘Lupins’ by the Irish poet Seamus Heaney (1939-2013) #poetry #gardening
