It was good to see how Chengyan Li's PhD research on May's and Johnson's use of metaphor use in their #Brexit discourse has progressed. Interesting correlations between discourse type (narrative, persuasive) and metaphor density and variety. #entretextos24

Eleonora Esposito presented two papers she co-authored, on how misogyny, femonationalism and xenophobia combine in the (social) media backlash against an actvist and an aid worker, resp. Such a good idea to present them together! #entretextos24

I'm analysing earnings calls again, which mostly means listening to arrogant American men being more or less chummy with each other. The interest is in the "more or less", looking for tension between participants. Oh, and the transcripts have omitted all phatic communication 🤦‍♀️

A hazy Monday morning in November, with a half-cold dampening the spirits. But then my RaAM mentee, Cun Zhang, shares her infectious enthusiasm for research and the splendid news that she has been promoted, and the metaphorical sun is breaking through🌞

My former PhD student susanne kopf, phd has received her venia docendi! (For non-Austrians: she now has a permanent position and can apply for a Chair.) It's really gratifying to see former students do well for themselves - congratulations!

I was very happy to be included in this webinar to talk about our new MA in Intercultural Business Communication and give a taster lecture. The recording will be available on the Linguistics and English Language, Lancaster Uni account soon. Many thanks to everyone who attended and the colleagues who set it up.

We have received several abstracts for the special journal of CDS already - keep them coming! The deadline is 1 December, and we are interested in a) the discourse of the manosphere in non-Anglo contexts, and b) research-based interventions. docs.google.com/document/d/1VZ…

Submit your extended abstract for a special issue of CDS on the language of the #manosphere by the end of Sunday. My MANTRaP colleagues and I are interested in research-based interventions and non-Anglo contexts. docs.google.com/document/d/1VZ…

I spoke to Merve Özçelik (Süleyman Demirel Uni), about an interview by Angela Merkel, and metaphor in the break-up of the German government. Video, audio & transcript are available here: drive.google.com/drive/folders/… bbc.co.uk/news/articles/… bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episod… (need to register

We were overwhelmed by the response to our call for a special issue of CDS on the language of the #manosphere: global contexts and research-based interventions - 111 extended abstracts! We can now publish 15 articles, but it will still be a difficult choice.

An MA student gave me a Christmas card today where they express the wish that my "Christmas discourse be free of problematic power relations". That's living and breathing discourse analysis🙂
