That makes 8 days with no new #Marburg infection in Rwanda. (Outbreak is declared over after 42 days.) One patient still in treatment. 🤞

Some interesting news coming out on the most recent #Marburg cases in Rwanda that I had questions about: 1. The healthcare worker that was diagnosed this week had indeed been vaccinated with the experimental Sabin vaccine.

No new #Marburg infection reported today by Rwanda. Case count stands at 65 cases including 15 deaths, 3 patients still in treatment More than 1500 people have been given Sabin Vaccine Institute’s Marburg vaccine candidate.

Wow. The human isolate of the Texas cattle H5N1 is way more transmissible by aerosols in ferrets than the bovine isolates tested so far. Another warning that we shouldn’t assume that H5N1 in people is always going to be mild & limited to conjunctivitis. nature.com/articles/s4158…

The sheer number of human infections is worrying, says immunologist Hensley Lab. “Every time the virus infects a human, there is a chance of random mutations that could increase the ability of this virus to infect humans.” Me in News from Science science.org/content/articl…

I spoke to Melody Schreiber The Guardian about the H5N1 case in BC. More and more human cases are occurring, along with mutations that indicate further human adaptation. We need to treat these cases like a warning, because that is what they are. theguardian.com/world/2024/nov…

Some good news: World Health Organization (WHO) has granted an emergency use listing — its equivalent to an U.S. FDA EUA — to Japan's #mpox vaccine. This will facilitate use of the vaccine, particularly in DRC, where Japan has promised to donate 3M doses.

Fabulous work with colleagues in Burundi, who took up Mpox sequencing to understand the situation AND are willing to share pre-publication, shows the expanding tree, and evidence for several introductions not taking off. Raw milk is popular in some circles, but can contain pathogens. That is well known. In the US , that list of pathogens is expanded and includes H5N1, a virus that is a pandemic threat. If you did not like the pandemic, don’t take a gamble for a next one: dont drink raw milk

The US has played a crucial role in research & outbreak response of high-consequences infectious diseases Closing down US facilities increases danger to the world (and if you are thinking UK, well, think again, UK is not punching that high… yet? Ever?) wired.com/story/hhs-niai…
