onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/bj… Great study from @Thushan_deSilva Susanna Dunachie (PITCH) and colleagues - in HSCT higher nAbs in those patients that received ChAd (vs mRNA) vaccines - the difficult question now is why!?

Excited to share our paper in Nature Immunology Congrats to Xin (Co-first) and all the other authors (Vamsee_Mallajosyula, Karan Kathuria and more). Special thanks to Prof Mark Davis for all his mentorship and guidance! UCPH Healthscience Stanford Medicine Lundbeckfonden nature.com/articles/s4159…

New paper out in Vaccine. Work let by the talented Anass Abbad: Co-administration of seasonal quadrivalent influenza and COVID-19 vaccines leads to enhanced immune responses to influenza virus and reduced immune responses to SARS-CoV-2 in naive mice pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39921982/

Long title and a year late - but still a pretty interesting paper. Great collaboration with Simon Lab (ISMMS). XBB.1.5 monovalent vaccine induces lasting cross-reactive responses to SARS-CoV-2 variants such as HV.1 and JN.1, as well as SARS-CoV-1, but elicits limited XBB.1.5

In study led by Caroline Kikawa & Andrea Loes, we use new assay to measure ~10,000 neutralization titers to recent influenza strains & show titers correlate w evolutionary success of viral strains Similar data could help forecast evolution for vaccine selection biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Antibody mutation doesn’t just fine-tune recognition—it can invent it. Our new paper in Immunity shows that somatic hypermutation can give rise to entirely new antibody specificities—expanding the immune system’s reach. 🔗 authors.elsevier.com/a/1l33E3qNrU-h… #immunology #Bcells #SHM

I painted this image to illustrate our recently published work on how somatic mutation has the potential to explosively expand the reach of the primary antibody repertoire. Excited that it made it to the cover of the June issue of Immunity ☀️ #antibody #immunity #SHM #Bcell

Science doesn’t need to go according to plan; it just needs to lead to a discovery. If doesn’t have to be done alone or together with a buddy; there just needs to be a discovery. It doesn’t need to happen fast or slow; just as long as there’s a discovery, then everybody is happy.

Can creativity be taught? “Absolutely!” Thank you nature for writing about how we need to nurture BOTH the ‘day science’ and ‘night science’ aspects of our work. The system of science is not really rewarding creativity now and we need to change this! nature.com/articles/d4158…

Act with chivalry when working with another person. Don't cling to your own ideas & status but rather dare to give up (or at least share) control. Allow yourself to be changed by the ideas. I wish we'd included in our paper this old concept by Keith Johnstone from improv theater.
