I’ve been waiting a long time for this one. Andrew Preston’s new book on how the New Deal invented the idea of “national security.” An important book to understand our foreign policy moment. It will be a must read.

I mentioned most of this (informally) at a Europa conference in Madrid several days ago. Europe should stop living in the 1990s. There is no End of History anymore. Things have changed. EU's economy is declining but it continues to dispense gratuitous lessons to the world.

Historically not always the case. Negotiations often happen while the war is ongoing. Precedents: Vietnam peace talks (1968-1973). Afghanistan peace talks (1982-1988). Korean armistice talks (1951-53).

Orwell coined “Cold War.” Honoured to find my book among the eight remarkable finalists for this year. Many thanks to the judges for this decision.

Some of those outdated strategic bombers from the 1960s destroyed today by Ukrainian operation was an object of contention in 1991-92 that almost led to a conflict. Now…just a shrug of shoulders. Pearl Harbour that does not matter.
