Did you know? J.S. Bach was a controversial choice for Thomaskantor, being neither a theologian nor a graduate in a town famed for its theological output. He was appointed after the composers Telemann and Graupner turned the job down. bit.ly/4aPdEzc

Did you know? The Abbey's performance will use period instruments of the type played in the 1720s: the viol da gamba which accompanies the alto aria 'Es ist vollbracht' had associations of antiquity and mourning, but also of royalty and grace, in early 18th century Germany.

Did you know? Bach adds a few moments which aren't in the Gospel of John: the cock crowing after Peter's denial is from Luke; Peter's tears in the same scene and the veil of the temple tearing in two at the point of Jesus' death are from Matthew. bit.ly/4aPdEzc
