The Bristol M1 is an example of excellent tech being underused due to inertia. RFC viewed monoplanes with suspicion, so did not issue by far and away its best fighter to frontline squadrons on the Western Front in 1915 It was so good one shot down a Fokker DVII in 1918.

David Spruce's excellent lecture for the RAF Museum on YouTube is worth a listen. The lecture examines the challenges of recruiting and training amidst revolutionary changes in technology and tactics, as well as addressing common myths surrounding its training programmes.
