Happy Democracy Day! 🇳🇬 Democracy thrives when voices rise, truths are told and justice is pursued, no matter the cost. Today, we salute the courage of those who hold power to account, especially journalists who serve the public interest and strengthen our democracy.

For most of last week, I engaged fellow journalists, media development workers, govt officials and a Dutch Parliamentarian on pressing issues affecting journalism globally. From press safety, shrinking digital space, “professionalization of journalism” to funding crisis....

...our discussions were rich and cross-context. One big takeaway for me is that the challenges facing journalists in the Global North and South are converging. Even the once-stable models in Europe and the U.S. are showing cracks.

These conversations also reinforce the need for deliberate revival and support for local journalism and business models. The future is local and niche. I'm a big fan of award organisers offering experience as part of journalism awards and Wole Soyinka Centre delivered big on this.

We had a great time with folks at the Free Press Unlimited, the Dutch Foreign Affairs Ministry, Dutch Parliament, the World Press Photo Exhibition and two Dutch newspapers - De volkskrant and De Groene Amsterdammer.
