One of the most overlooked threats to journalists is the silence from within, when media organisations fail to stand by their staff facing danger. In his submission, Bernard Akede describes solidarity within the newsroom is a crucial line of defence. #WSCIJConversations

Not all attacks on journalists are physical, some are aimed at their reputation. At #WSCIJConversations, it was revealed that when stories are backed by solid facts, critics often resort to targeting the journalist personally.

Happy Democracy Day! 🇳🇬 Democracy thrives when voices rise, truths are told and justice is pursued, no matter the cost. Today, we salute the courage of those who hold power to account, especially journalists who serve the public interest and strengthen our democracy.

...our discussions were rich and cross-context. One big takeaway for me is that the challenges facing journalists in the Global North and South are converging. Even the once-stable models in Europe and the U.S. are showing cracks.

These conversations also reinforce the need for deliberate revival and support for local journalism and business models. The future is local and niche. I'm a big fan of award organisers offering experience as part of journalism awards and Wole Soyinka Centre delivered big on this.
