Blackthorn, ground ivy, & red dead nettle are flowering. Blackthorn flowers appear before its leaves. Ground ivy was used in herbal medicine as a tonic. Dead nettle doesn't sting and its tops and flowers are edible. #signsofspring #Wildflowers #FlowerOfTheDay

Spring spruce up: We've new boardwalk banners to welcome you! Our Reserve team have woven this beautiful willow screening at old Reedbed hide, until we can build the viewing platform this autumn. For the birds we've installed a sturdier tree trunk at the bird feeder station.

The Reserve Team counted 54 mallard ducklings in seven different wild families on the ponds and ditches yesterday. We had a spoonbill drop in on Friday morning as well and the sand martins are back. See this week's Wildlife Sightings page for details. ow.ly/Evjb50VvAkk

An amazing way to see the wetlands and its wildlife is from the water. Our Senior Reserve Warden Abbie Hobbs recently took this aerial photo of the Wetland Discovery Boat Safari. The boats run every day of the Easter school holidays, for £3 per person. ow.ly/FmgK50VwkJH

Signs of Spring: Greylag goslings in the picnic area opposite the boat jetty. We spotted our first greylag family on Tuesday afternoon. Greylags seem to love nibbling the grass in the picnic area and the proximity to the water at the boat safari.

Signs of Spring: Snake's head fritillary has stems with drooping white or purple 'chequered' flowers that like damp soil and damp meadows - perfect conditions on the wetlands! We are seeing them on the islands of the boat safari and on our Black Rabbit Triangle.

Grass snakes can live 15-15 years in the wild. This female, found in Saturday's Reptile Survey, was last recorded onsite in 2015! We photograph the unique banding on each grass snake we find, compiling a book of grass snake 'mugshots'. New snakes are named after our staff.

Toad tadpoles have been hatching out in the entry pond! Look our for them in the shadows on warmer days. The WWT Arundel Toad Patrol Members who assisted the adult toads crossing Mill Road earlier this year are pleased to see the toad-poles this month.

Visit our Trumpeter Swan pond along the Woodland Loop boardwalk where you will find plenty of wild mandarin ducks, like this handsome male. There was a clutch of ducklings on this pond last spring so we are keeping an eye out . Photo by volunteer Andy Burns.

What's around today? Keep your eyes and ears open for warblers! This quick glimpse of a sedge warbler was filmed earlier this week by volunteer Andy Burns.

If you are visiting us tomorrow please note that the town of Arundel may be congested, with road closures due to the scout's St. George's Day Parade and the Arundel Bluebell Charity Tractor Run, both on. To get to us we suggest entering town via the Causeway Roundabout.

Loads of sand martins swirling around the San Martin hide again this week. We're seeing 30-50 at a time above the hide, over the water and popping in and out of nest holes. See what else is wild at WWT Arundel this week on our sightings page: ow.ly/y4X550VIM8z
