This morning, Deke DES Antonio Pedro held discussions with the PM of Eswatini Rt Hon Russell Mmiso Dlamini accompanied by Housing Minister A. Maphalala & UNRC George Wachira. Discussed Eswatini's development plans & shared areas of possible collaboration with UNECA.

Among others, discussed role of data and analytics to support investment decisions including spatial planning and infrastructure; & ways of increasing the Kingdom's competiveness. Also thanked Eswatini for successful hosting of K. Annan Road Safety Awards.

World Bank & UN teams in Eswatini held discussions on their respective programmes & ways of enhancing alignment & synergies. Led by World Bank Rep. Ikechi Okorie and RC George Wachira , the teams affirmed close collaboration for increased impact.

The teams also underscored the importance of supporting national efforts to strengthen accountability, establish effective systems for planning and implementation, and move away from siloed approaches—promoting transparency and collaboration as key to sustainable development.

Today, UNRC George Wachira joined the Hon. MoA and the rep. MTEA at Sigcaweni High School to commemorate Desertification and Drought Day 2025 under the theme “Asibuyisele umhlaba esimeni sawo, sitakhele ematfuba”(Let’s restore our land and build opportunities).

George Wachira commended Eswatini for its leadership, noting that “Eswatini’s sustained forest cover, currently at around 30%, is well above the global min. threshold of 10%,” & encouraged cont. efforts to safeguard & strengthen this Achiev. amid rising environ. & dev. pressures

The rep. of the MTEA raised concern about environmental degradation trends within the country, stating: “The rampant cutting down of indigenous trees and the far-reaching consequences for biodiversity and the very stability of our land” are becoming a critical issue.

The Hon. MoA stressed the importance of youth-led grassroots initiatives in tackling desertification & climate change. Drawing att to the role of local communities, he said: “The UNCCD framework requires that young people should drive grassroots change like it is happening here"

Minister Tshawuka joins partners for #UNCCD Day at Sigcaweni under the theme “Restore Land, Unlock Opportunities.” The community was applauded for restoring degraded land & a tree planting exercise marked our shared commitment to land restoration and climate resilience.
