Random thoughts about confidence intervals: When we teach precision & accuracy, we often use images of a target, like these from the Wikipedia article: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accuracy_… But I think this analogy leads to confusion about the interpretation of the confidence interval. 1/4

For all the protestors, pepper spray is oil based. If you get sprayed DO NOT rub your eyes. Immediately blink as much as you can to wash out some of the oil with your own tears. Then, wash your eyes with baby shampoo and rinse copiously with water. Be safe.

I hate grades. I hate creating them. I hate assigning them. I hate when students stress about them. And I especially hate how administrators obsess over them.

I've made a habit this semester of telling each of my students I expect great things out of them because they have potential. Now grading, I'm impressed with how many rose to the occasion. Esp the "low performance" students. Positive encouragement really does go far

Me and the fam had a great time MD Anderson-UTH Grad celebrating #GSBS60. Great to reconnect with friends and see familiar faces; plus the new dean is a class act #WeareGSBS

Ok, y'all told me I didn't need to be perfect, so here it is. A call for book chapters for a tentatively titled volume: Black In The Ivory: Maneuvering the Academy In Our Own Words. This volume seeks to share the experiences of current Black doctoral students and graduates. Yes,

I will remind people that the NIH proposed exactly such a system TWENTY FIVE YEARS AGO, but it was killed by a combination of lobbying from AAAS, NEJM and many other societies, and by senior scientists letting them get away with it. collections.nlm.nih.gov/catalog/nlm:nl…

Back in the mouse room after a year of exclusively teaching. Nice to be at the bench, but I really did not expect to stick with this model system for as long as I have

Many Black scientists fall through the cracks during their postdoc; I almost did myself. Last month, 70+ National Black Postdoctoral Association (NBPA) members met for the 1st time to strengthen our community.🙏🏾RT to help us reach new members/sponsors so we can continue to grow no matter the political climate

As this is a delicate political moment, in which words are being weaponized, can we get some of the language right? DIVERSE is a feature of a group, not a person! A person is what they are. There is no such thing as a diverse hire/employee. Thank you. scientificamerican.com/blog/voices/di…
