Saying an Associate functions at the level of a middle grade doctor after a 2 year course that’s so inadequate even the GMC is bracing for “reputational impact” is really something! Whilst the “leader” of this project openly promulgates this, how can it be taken seriously?

Whilst I would like to comment on the hopeful state of medicine within the UK this year, I cannot. Whilst the atmosphere is not hopeful, I am, and I am glad to be a part of teams trying to make it better for future generations. So here we go. Issues to highlight. 1/n.

Every country prioritises its own med grads—except the UK. In 3 yrs, specialty training apps soared 67% (20,194→33,870). IMGs nearly doubled. Meanwhile, UK grads are left behind—facing joblessness not from incompetence, but a system rigged against them. 🧵

So going through the GMC financial reports, DHSC have paid them £8.3 million from 2020-23 for PA/AA regulation work. That’s a lot of money for 4,000 PAs with only 1,000 registered. This doesn’t include money paid to the RCP, 2024 costs or the upcoming legal costs.

What’s worse than PAs working as Doctor substitute in NHS ? PAs working as “clinical academics” replacing clinical academic Drs, They will bring down the standard of medical education in UK Some PAs are teaching clinical skills to med students just 2 yrs post PA qualifications

Yesterday the Leng review came to Derriford (Plymouth) to hear all sides of the issue surrounding PAs in the NHS. Derriford is well known for employing a high number of PAs and so it makes sense for them to visit. The review is meant to be unbiased and fair.
