A day of extremes on the #KimberleyReefConnect project. Clear waters & abundant fish life at Long Reef in the morning. Turbid waters & depauperate silt-laden habitat at Troughton Island in the afternoon. Uunguu sea country is diverse & dynamic! #marinebiodiversity #discovery

Big tides means that water is often turbid in the Kimberley. In response to this, corals express red fluorescent proteins to amplify the light available to symbionts. Photos taken from W Holothuria Reef, Jamison Reef & Rob Roy Reef, NW Kimberley Marine Park. #KimberleyReefConnect

Pipefishes are highly cryptic fishes & most are challenging to find. This Pacific Shortbody Pipefish Choeroichthys brachysoma was sheltering in rubble under dead coral. This is the only pipefish we’ve found on Wunambal Gambeera sea country #KimberleyReefConnect #syngnathid

Uunguu Rangers are hard at work sorting through rubble collected at 12-15m deep from a remote shoal near Rothery Reef in the NW Kimberley Marine Park. Tabitha Kowan says the fragile brittlestars (Ophuroids) were her favourite find. #KimberleyReefConnect #WunambalGaambera

Many sea slugs are specialist predators of cnidarians 🪸. The sunshine yellow sea slug Phestilla melanobrachia feeds exclusively on the sun coral Tubastrea coccinea. This pair was found at 15m in an overhang in the NW Kimberley Marine Park. 📷 by Lisa Kirkendale & Henry Carrick

Looks like a muwaarru (Estuary Stonefish) but this little False Stonefish Scorpaenopsis diabolus is not as venomous - but predators still need to avoid it. Just part of the fantastic diversity of fishes on Wunambal Gaambera sea country. #KimberleyReefConnect #marinebiodiversity

Back in 2009 I began a mission with Western Australian Museum to document hard coral diversity in the Kimberley, aiming to enrich our understanding of the region's biodiversity and biogeography. 171 sites and 15 years later I have some remarkable results to share🧵 museum.wa.gov.au/research/recor…

I am *extremely* excited about this. Please share with anyone who might be keen: we're offering a FULLY FUNDED PhD studentship, exploring: Colonial Natural Historical Collecting in the South Asian Indian Ocean. There are some important stories to tell here ccc.cam.ac.uk/cc-ee/students…
