Tough Friday back in Hutchinson, KS planting regional wheat disease screening rows. Wind > 20 mph. Making an extra effort to be patient with each other today.

Last day of FY23- we took a moment to appreciate the sunrise before finishing planting here at Hutchinson, KS. Appreciate Nick Schuh, Kyle Wicker, and Johnathan Antholz who squeezed every last plot out of this last week.

Another nice day to plant our KSU Wheat Pathology stripe rust management trials here in Rossville, KS! You can see Mary Guttieri and crew in the background planting breeding plots - we’re grateful for good collaborations with the USDA!

You know it’s the end of planting season when you start breaking stuff. “Tying up the loose ends” and filling out the edges proved particularly painful today.

Not good news. April 15- near Castroville, TX. It is atypically early for stem rust to be this evident on susceptible wheat germplasm. Humidity is high and temperatures are favorable for continued development.

Harvest is coming on fast- too fast- in South-Central Kansas. Upside: more time to turnaround for planting. Downside: we still have a lot to do to be ready.

Beautiful morning in the Fusarium head blight nursery today. A gratifying contrast between the conventionally bred lines on the left and our dominant male sterile recurrent selection outcomes on the right. Flowered same day. Thanks to ⁊⁊K-State Department of Plant Pathology⁩ team for great scab!

Closing out the day in our #WheatCAP trial at Hays. Planted last week of September. Wheats resistant to wheat streak mosaic virus are outstanding in the field.

Training the next generation of wheat breeders this afternoon- ⁊Johnathan⁩ is setting up four of our summer interns to take turns cutting stripe rust spreader rows. Our Hege 140 is a nice place to start.

Anyone know what’s up at DFW tonight? SkyTrain down. Most escalators and moving sidewalks down. Flight displays not updating. Maybe I just need to click my 👠 3X?
