Tough Friday back in Hutchinson, KS planting regional wheat disease screening rows. Wind > 20 mph. Making an extra effort to be patient with each other today.

Last day of FY23- we took a moment to appreciate the sunrise before finishing planting here at Hutchinson, KS. Appreciate Nick Schuh, Kyle Wicker, and Johnathan Antholz who squeezed every last plot out of this last week.

You know it’s the end of planting season when you start breaking stuff. “Tying up the loose ends” and filling out the edges proved particularly painful today.

Not good news. April 15- near Castroville, TX. It is atypically early for stem rust to be this evident on susceptible wheat germplasm. Humidity is high and temperatures are favorable for continued development.

Not difficult to distinguish the wheat streak mosaic virus susceptible from the resistant today at Hays.

At Ehmke’s in Lane County, KS today for wheat streak selections. First year I have needed my mud boots! Susceptible breeding lines on left. Cmc4+Wsm1 line on right.

Closing out the day in our #WheatCAP trial at Hays. Planted last week of September. Wheats resistant to wheat streak mosaic virus are outstanding in the field.

It was fun to watch her today- not sure what she was thinking, though!

Training the next generation of wheat breeders this afternoon- ⁦Johnathan⁩ is setting up four of our summer interns to take turns cutting stripe rust spreader rows. Our Hege 140 is a nice place to start.
