ā€œThe U.S. government has used Yemen to show it has the wherewithal and determination to punch Iran with a hard blow and stop it from acquiring a nuclear weapon,ā€ said Wechsler.Ā wsj.com/world/middle-e…

Today I read Abundance by @ezraklien and Derek Thompson. I couldn’t agree more with its call for prioritizing more of what people need – more and less expensive housing and energy, more and better jobs and inventions. I hope the next Democratic candidate for president reads it.

Stuck by Yoni Appelbaum argues that the decline in US geographic mobility is the most important social change of the past half century, driven by our failed housing policies. Both liberal and conservative elites have worked to prevent construction and thus drive up housing prices.

The Silk Roads by Peter Frankopan is a sweeping examination of the heart of the Eurasian landmass that has long connected the civilizations on its fringes. The powers of any era have sought to dominate this center of gravity and thus global trade and resources. Worth a read.

A huge loss to so many. He and Kurt Campbell were my first bosses at the Pentagon early in the Clinton years. One of my first assignments was to write a speech for him — a little intimidating at the time as I had been often been assigned to read his books in grad school.

Do you have a child graduating? Someone reluctant to think about their future finances? If so, this little book by my longtime friend and mentor Charley Ellis may be the best possible gift to give as they set out on their life journey. Remember, compounding is your friend.

Impossible Monsters by Michael Taylor tells the story of the revolutions that followed the discovery of dinosaurs. These fossils challenged the Bible, provided evidence for evolution, and shook the Victorian world. Worth reading before seeing the new Jurassic Park movie this Summer.

While in Venice recently I read The City of Falling Angels by John Berendt, a nonfiction story of arson at the La Fenice opera and the local egos and eccentrics involved. As Berendt quickly learns: ā€œVenetians never tell the truth.Ā We mean precisely the opposite of what we say.ā€

There's a number of unanswered questions about #Israel's strikes on #Iran, but that shouldn't distract us from what we know about this conflict -- and thus what we can reasonably predict for the days ahead. Here's my latest for Atlantic Council: atlanticcouncil.org/blogs/new-atla…

Tactically, there is no reason to doubt what Trump stated on Saturday night—that the strikes were a ā€œspectacular success.ā€ Strategically, while the risks are high and the final outcomes are far from certain, I believe Trump made the right call. atlanticcouncil.org/blogs/new-atla…

I was quoted earlier today: ā€œIran has a peculiar sense of symmetry and typically a longer time horizon than the United States.ā€ Worth noting the symmetry in Tehran’s latest announcement that they dropped the same number of bombs as we did. washingtonpost.com/world/2025/06/…

Luigi Barzini’s classic book The Italians is the personal reflections of an Italian journalist who describes the indelible character of his countrymen. As he sees it, these traits have been instrumental to the greatness of individual Italians, but have frustrated national unity.
