148 days ago we commenced our 2023 bat activity survey season. 237 surveys later and averaging nearly 6 surveyors on site each day, we will conclude the survey season tonight in Bishopthorpe, York. Another fabulous effort from our experienced team of surveyors. Bat Conservation Trust NEYEDC
An early start to count wading birds on farmland close to the Humber Estuary. 32 curlew have been observed near Hedon, 6km from the estuary. This functionally linked land is often overlooked at this distance but is important habitat at high tide. BTO BTO E Yorks & Hull Humber Nature Partnership
We are continuing wintering bird surveys on functionally linked land close to the Humber Estuary this week. Notable counts of curlew near Thorngumbald (68), Paull (32) and Preston (25) observed. Curlew Action Curlews in crisis Humber Nature Partnership BTO BTO E Yorks & Hull RSPB England
We have submitted all our 2023 bat records to the local data centres and our team have observed 1640 roosting bats at 56 sites. Notable roosts were 419 soprano pipistrelles in York and 219 soprano pipistrelles in Bolton Abbey. Bat Conservation Trust NEYEDC Greater Lincolnshire Nature Partnership NBN Trust

Water Pipit on the Humber near King George Dock, Hull, on my Wold Ecology surveys this a.m - I've been looking for one for an age here, so very satisfying to finally bump into one! Also 2 Jack Snipe in the riverside grassland here.

A Redstart was an unexpected treat on today's Wold Ecology North York Moors Wader Surveys, as were the Tree Pipit & Chiffchaff in the same spot - out-of-habitat migrants in a high spur of farmland jutting into Levisham moor, in heavy showers... obs-style birding in the sticks!
An entertaining day's wader surveying up on the NY Moors for Wold Ecology despite the storms - yet more Snipe (very noticeable this year), plenty of Golden Plovers and Curlews, and the closest views of Goshawk I've ever had in the UK...
As another busy bat activity surveying season approaches, today we have been assessing numerous buildings for the National Trust in Bransdale, North Yorkshire. National Trust NYMoorsTourism North York Moors NP @WhitbyNats Visit Rosedale, North Yorkshire YorksNatureTourism North Yorkshire
A big thank you to Chris Wold Ecology for talking to our bat crazy FS2 children today. We learnt so much about bats and where they live and most importantly, what we can do to protect them. Save the Bats
Behold, the most beautiful creature on the North Yorkshire Moors - a Common Snipe chick in all its intricate, helpless glory. A privilege to find (and then quickly leave) her/him on today's Wold Ecology surveys, which are (anecdotally) showing a positive season for this species.
We have now completed over 100 bat activity surveys since 1st May and last night was arguably the most spectacular. Over 20 noctule bats were closely observed foraging at a site near Leconfield, E. Yorks. Bat Conservation Trust Mammal Society Mammal Next Door BBC Springwatch East Yorks Bat Group
It's not all about the waders-in-industrial-landscapes on my Wold Ecology Killingholme surveys - passerines sometimes play ball, too.... more here: northernrustic.blogspot.com/2024/09/north-… #Longtailedtit
Two of a record 521 Avocets on our Wold Ecology surveys at North Killingholme this a.m, at one point all on the Haven due to the (very) high tide this morning - my highest count in the (many!) years we've been monitoring here.
Blog #74 in our #YorkshireIn100Species series features the impressive Giant Horntail and its parasite, the Sabre Wasp. Their fascinating host-parasite interaction plays out hidden from view in deadwood... Dan Lombard of Wold Ecology introduces us: neyedc.org.uk/100-species/20…
Cryptic, charismatic & characterful, Jack Snipe are hard to beat - seven in my Wold Ecology survey area today (all in a small, muddy industrial area by Hull docks) were a real treat. All sat tight and gave me the thousand yard stare, unlike their cowardly common cousins....
