'I have often said it of myself, and it is true, that nothing that has not a proper name of a man or a woman to it, affixes any idea upon my mind. I could remember who was King Ethelbald’s great aunt, and not be sure whether she lived in the year 500 or 1500.'

Just went online to see if I could get the complete works of Evelyn Waugh as published by OUP. Turns out they're between £85 and £100 each... The library beckons.

Does anyone read Fanny Burney any more? And why do people insist on called her FRANCES Burney? Are we so prudish? (NB I know why, it's Americans, but we don't have to do everything they tell us to do!)

Went out to buy pens. There are no pens in my house that don't leak through the paper of my notebook, other than a horrible biro that makes my handwriting ugly. Returned half an hour later with a newspaper and a sandwich, but no pens. Sigh.

We need a ‘bring back the bedtime story’ campaign - daily snuggly reading is key to brain growth and a phone just rots the brain.

This week, leading up to Ascension Day on Thursday, is Rogationtide - an ancient season of processions to ask for blessings on the land and the fruits of the earth. As summer blossoms, Rogationtide celebrates our deep connection to nature and its gifts aclerkofoxford.blogspot.com/2013/05/lfric-…

READING FOR PLEASURE has the biggest positive impact of any factor on children's life chances. So whatever else you do - please never stop reading books with kids & encouraging them to read. Never stop helping them find books to read & love. Never stop changing lives. #literacy
